IGR U-Pick Farm In Abu Dhabi
Have you ever wondered how food is grown in the middle of the desert? The Organic farm in Al Rahba is a dream come true for everyone who wants to know where their locally grown, organic vegetables come from. The interactive farm is a 45 minute drive away from Abu Dhabi Island. Visitors can spend an educational day at the farm and harvest their own organic vegetables and herbs every Saturday from November to May. The farm will be open from the 18th of November this season (2017).
I am trying to source most of my vegetables locally and preferably organic so I am very excited about this ‘u-pick’ farm project by IGR. The farm is one of the few organic farms in the United Arab Emirates that has an European organic certificate and is also global gap certified. IGR Farm has 7 greenhouses and a total production area of 16560 square meters. They also have enclosures with goats, ducks, turkeys and chickens. The manager Raghav is very passionate about his work and has an extensive knowledge on how to run an environmental friendly, toxin free farm growing delicious vegetables.
Depending on the season the organic farm offers butternut, marrow, okra, eggplant, green beans, cucumber, zuchini, capsicum, onion, broccoli, cherry, red beet, turnip, squash, spinach, raddish, coriander, rocket, parsley, kale, dill, mint, fennel, sweet potato, tomato, carrot, cauliflower, kohlrabi, celery, sweet corn and coriander.
Prices are very reasonable in my opinion with cucumber, capsicum and tomatoes being around 10-12 dirhams per kg and herbs are 15 dirhams each.
The Organic farm is open every Saturday during the growing season from 6am in the morning until it gets dark at 5pm. The farm usually opens in November and closes in May. For all the updates join the IGR certified organic farms Facebook group.
Like most farms the Rahba farm can be a bit tricky to find at first, I have had no issues using the google map app on my phone. The entrance is free of charge, but they are not accepting card payments for their produce. Just bring some scissors, a reusable bags, cash and wear farm-suitable clothes. Children all ages are welcome under adult supervision.
November – May, every Saturday from 6am-5pm.
