iHerb Food Haul December 2017
iHerb is an American online store which delivers thousands of products directly to your doorstep. In America iHerb offers free shipping, however when ordering from the UAE the shipping costs can get quite high, so the best thing to do is to add shipping savers for the cart. By adding shipping savers it is possible to get the shipping costs with DHL down to 8 dirhams. If you are living in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or any other Emirate, click here for more information about ordering from iHerb, custom charges and delivery information. For 5% off your entire order use code RDD731 at checkout.
Nutritional yeast is incredibly hard to find in the UAE at times, it is usually available at Organic foods and cafe or Carrefour, however there are times where it’s sold out throughout the whole country. I also prefer the unfortified version without vitamin b12 and folic acid, which is even harder to find, so I was excited to try Frontier’s nooch. This nutritional yeast only has one ingredient: inactive yeast. Nutritional yeast tastes great in rice and pasta dishes, with beans, in soup and on salads. I bought unfortified nutritional yeast by Frontier for around 12 dirhams, the small size is perfect for my handbag.
Barbecue Jackfruit is a great alternative for everyone avoiding soy and gluten. This particular brand is also oil free. The ingredients are very simple: Jackfruit, tomato paste; vinegar, molasses, filtered water, onion, evaporated cane juice, sea salt, garlic black pepper, chili powder, paprika, liquid smoke. Although I don’t eat meat substitutes very often, I really enjoy using jackfruit in tacos and stirfrys. Upton’s comes in two different flavours, bar-b-que and chili lime flavour, which I did not try yet.
Ghirardelli makes chocolate with only one ingredient: unsweetened cocoa. I like having sugar-free chocolate at home that I can chop up and use in chocolate chip pancakes, cookies or as ganache. Dairy-free chocolate chips are incredibly difficult to find in UAE, so making my own from a simple chocolate bar has been a great alternative. The Go Raw chocolate is made of two simple ingredients: Raw organic cacao and raw organic agave nectar. The package contains 6 individually wrapped chocolates and is a great snack when I have chocolate cravings.
Organic hemp seeds is another product which is difficult to find in the UAE. I like to sprout hemp seeds and use them on my salads, soups, in my oatmeal and to make raw crackers. The seeds are incredibly nutritious, being high in protein, fiber, omega 3, 6 and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).
Acai bowls are one of my favourite breakfasts and making them at home with high quality acai powder is super easy. I have tried many different acai powders and Sunfood’s is my favourite by far. Acai powder can be added to smoothies, raw cakes or sprinkled on oat meal, fruit or nice cream. The superfood is high in Vitamin A, C, calcium and iron. If you prefer pulp and not powder, frozen acai pulp is sold at Mawasim.
