Trying Out Green New Born Diapers In UAE
Commercial diapers contain several different chemicals which can be harmful to the baby’s health. The outer plastic lining of diapers is usually made of a polyethylene film, with organic diapers it is made of vegetable-oil based bioplastic. The inner lining which is in direct contact with the baby’s skin is usually made of polypropylene. The absorbent center of a diaper in commercial diapers is made from wood pulp which is bleached with chlorine. It also contains polymers, made from sodium polyacrylate which soaks up all the urine. Most diapers, eco-friendly or not contain sodium polyacrylate. When the powder gets wet it turns into a gel which can stick to the baby’s genitals and cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, fever, vomiting and staph infections. The very same chemical was also banned from being used in tampons because of it’s link to the toxic shock syndrome. Another commonly present chemical is dioxin which is a by product of the bleaching process. Dioxin has been linked to cancer and is one of the reasons I prefer to use a period cup instead of tampons and pads. The plastic in disposable diapers contains phthalates, which is an endocrine disrupting toxin that mimics human hormones in the body.
I believe that cloth diapering is the healthiest for the baby, however as this is not always possible there are several disposable diapers on the market which have less toxic chemicals. I have found five different toxin-free diaper brands sold in UAE: pure born, naty, seventh generation, moltex and biobaby.
1. Biobaby 22 dirhams for 20 diapers – 1.10 dirhams each
Environment and toxins: Biobaby diapers are the cheapest eco-friendly diapers that I could find. They claim to be 40% recyclable, and that 70% of the diaper will biodegrade within 3-6 years. They apparently also contain 30% less chemicals than conventional diapers, however I did not find any information if the diapers are bleached with chlorine or what the plastic lining is made of.
These worked very well for my son at the beginning when my son still had the umbilical cord attached. They were the perfect size when he was first born and there were no leaks at all. Biobaby diapers are available at mumzworld.
2. PureBorn 37 dirhams for 32 diapers – 1.15 dirhams each
Environment and toxins: PureBorn diapers are made of corn-stretch based, degradable plastic and organic bamboo pulp. The organic bamboo pulp is more sustainable comparing to wood pulp. The plastic does not contain any hormone-disrupting phthalates and the entire diaper is compostable and disintegrates within 6 months. The diapers are not bleached and the bamboo pulp is free of pesticides and sodium polyacrylate. Bamboo fiber is also anti-bacterial and very absorbent.
In the first weeks I have found the pure born diapers a little too big for my baby, however they were very comfortable and once he was over 4.5 kilograms they were a perfect fit. The control line is very helpful . Pure born diapers are sold at mumzworld online and in store in Dubai. They come in three different designs.
3. Naty 47.50 dirhams for 34 diapers – 1.40 dirhams each
Environment and toxins: Naty diapers are made of GMO-free corn and do not contain chlorine or any other fragrances. The cellulose inside does contain SAP crystals (super absorbent polymer) which aids in soaking up the urine.
The cheapest I have found them for online was on Youmah. To get 50 dirhams off your first order use code: elizabirg. Naty diapers are also sold at Mawasim for 68.25 dirhams in Abu Dhabi, the organic store has a 25% off offer every first weekend of the month.
4. Seventh generation 79 dirhams for 40 diapers – 1.97 dirhams each
Environment and toxins: Seventh generation diapers are not chemically bleached and do not contain laxes or fragrances. Seventh generation lists all their ingredients on the package: Unbleached wood pulp, sodium polyacrylate, polypropylene, adhesives, polymer spandex, polyurethane, pigments.
Seventh generation diapers are available at Youmah. To get 50 dirhams off your first order use code: elizabirg. Youmah also has an offer of 296 dirhams for 180 newborn diapers for babies up to 4.5 kg, making it 1.64 dirhams per diaper.
5. Moltex 87 dirhams for 42 diapers – 2.07 dirhams each
Environment and toxins: Moltex by ontex is made of 40% renewable materials. The inner lining is made of 40% biodegradable polylactic acid, which is usually made of corn starch and 60% polypropylene. They core contains wood pulp and polyacrylate. They do not contain any chlorine, latex or fragrances.
Moltex diapers are sold at Organic foods and cafe who have a 20% discount on all products every 3rd Saturday of the month and the Friday prior when bought in store.
For the first weeks I mainly used moltex, seventh generation, naty and bio baby. Once my baby was a little bigger I preferred pure born, as they do not contain any polyacrylate. I did not experience any leaks with any of the diapers, but I also made sure to change them at every feed.
