Testing Lactation Teas To Increase Milk Supply
Especially in the first weeks after giving birth I did everything to establish my milk supply. I took a combination of supplements, foods and lactation teas. When choosing a lactation tea I always make sure that it’s organic, as many teas contain pesticides. The main ingredient in most of the lactation teas is fennel and fenugreek. I enjoy the taste of both, however some women can not stand the taste of fennel. It may help to add sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup. It may also help to drink it cold or to mix it with another tea.
Whenever I am out and do not have time to brew tea I take fenugreek in capsule form in combination with marshmallow root instead. This is also a great alternative for those who do not enjoy drinking tea.
1. Milkmaid organic tea by earth mama
I am a huge fan of all of the earth mama angel baby products. I use their nipple balm and baby shampoo. The milkmaid tea contains fenugreek, fennel, red raspberry, stinging nettle, milk thistle, orange peel, anise seed, caraway seed, alfalfa leaf. I had this tea with me in hospital and drank it as soon as I gave birth, my milk came in on the second day after my C-section. Milkmaid tea is available on iHerb and also an iHerb shipping saver. 2. Gaia herbs lactation support tea
The lactation support tea contains fennel, goat’s rue aerial part, fenugreek seed, stinging nettle leaf, lemon balm leaf, marshmallow root. Goat’s rue also known as galega is pictured on the front of the tea. Galega literally means to bring on milk. (Gale = milk, ega = to bring on)
3. Woman’s nursing support by Yogi tea
I am a big fan of all of the Yogi teas, every single one that I have tasted so far was amazing. The nursing support tea contains fennel seed, chamomile flower, stinging nettle leaf, anise seed, fenugreek seed, lavender flower. The lavender and chamomile help to soothe the stomach, which really helped me after giving birth. Yogi tea is available at Organic foods and cafe in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and also on iHerb.
4. Mother’s milk, Shatavari cardamom by traditional medicinals
This tea is suitable for women who either hate the taste of fennel or who do not see any effect by supplementing with fenugreek or fennel. It contains shatavari root, cardamom seed and marshmallow leaf. Shatavari is an Ayurvedic herb which strengthens the uterus and help with child birth recovery. It also promotes fertility and regulates menstruation. I chose not to buy the standard Mother’s milk traditional medicinals tea, because it contained spearmint leaf, which decreases milk supply for me. The other ingredients are fennel, anise, coriander, fenugreek, blessed thistle, lemongrass leaf, verbena leaf, marshmallow root. You can order it on iHerb.
5. Organic fennel tea by Sonnentor and Health&Heather
Both teas contain one ingredient: fennel. Fennel is well known to increase breast milk supply. While this works for some women others have the opposite effect with fennel. For me personally it worked very well and I noticed an increase in milk 24 hours after. I bought the Heath&Heather tea from Mawasim in Abu Dhabi and the Sonnentor tea is from Organic foods and cafe.
